Most of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this can be true. Soemtimes, comfort foods can be perfectly healthy and good for us to eat. Several foods honestly do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you are feeling a little bit down and you’re in need of a happiness pick me up, try a couple of these.

Eggs, you might be amazed to discover, are great at fighting depression. Just make sure that you don’t toss out the yolk. The yolk is the most essential part of the egg in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are high in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you boost your mood. This is because these vitamins help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–work better. Consume an egg and feel better!

Build a trail mix from seeds and/or nuts. Your mood can be raised by eating peanuts, almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etcetera. This is because these foods are loaded with magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin levels. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that directs your brain how you feel at all times. The more of it you have, the better you are going to feel. Not only that, nuts, specifically, are a great protein food source.

Cold water fish are good if you want to be in a better mood. Tuna, trout, mackerel, herring and wild salmon are all full of omega-3 fats and DHA. These are two substances that increase the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s true: chomping on a tuna fish sandwich can actually help you fight back depression.

It’s easy to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Quinoa, millet, teff and barley are all truly wonderful for helping increase your happiness levels. They can help you feel full for longer as well, helping you feel better. It’s not difficult to feel depressed when you feel hungry! The reason these grains are so good for your mood is that they are easy for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps jumpstart a rise in your glucose levels which in turn takes your mood to a happier place.

Your mood could truly be helped by green tea. You knew it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a particular amino acid known as L-theanine. Studies show that this particular amino acid can basically stimulate brain waves. This helps focus your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body.
