Turn to Food to Elevate Your Mood

Many of us have been trained to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. But if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, though, comfort foods can be altogether healthy and it’s good for you to consume them. There are some foods that, when you eat them, may improve your mood. If you are feeling a little bit down and need a happiness pick me up, try a few of these.

Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually great at dealing with depression. Just make sure that you do not toss the yolk. The yolk is the most important part of the egg iwhen it comes to helping raise your mood. Eggs, specifically the yolks, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you elevate your mood. This is because they help your neural transmitters–the parts of your brain that dictate your mood–function better. Eat a couple of eggs to feel better!

Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, etc are all good for elevating your mood. This is because these nuts are rich in magnesium, which helps to raise serotonin production. Serotonin is a feel-good chemical substance that tells the brain how to feel at any given point in time. The higher your serotonin levels, the more pleasant you will feel. Not just that but nuts, particularly, are a terrific source of protein.

If you would like to defeat depression, try eating some cold water fish. Salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, trout, and so on, they’re all high in omega-3s and DHA. Omega-3 fatty acids and DHA are two things that actually help the grey matter in your brain function a lot better. It’s the truth: consuming tuna fish sandwiches can really help you battle your depression.

It’s not hard to overcome your bad mood when you eat grains. Teff, barley, millet, quinoa, etc are all good for helping you feel happier. They help you feel full as well which can actually help to improve your mood. Feeling famished can truly make you feel terrible! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not hard for your body to digest and process. These foods are easier to digest than others which helps promote a rise in your blood sugar which in turn kicks up your mood to a happier place.

Green tea is fantastic for moods. You were sure it had to be included in this article, right? Green tea is loaded with a certain amino acid called L-theanine. Research has discovered that this amino acid promotes the production of brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while simultaneously relaxing the rest of your body. You were already aware that that green tea helps you be better. And now you are aware that green tea can help raise your mood too!

Now you realize that junk food isn’t necessarily what you have to eat when you want to help your moods get better. Try a few of these instead!
