Turn to Food to Boost Your Mood
Many of us have been conditioned to believe that comfort foods are bad and should be avoided. However, if your comfort food is candy or junk food this is true. Other times, however, comfort foods can be totally healthy and it’s good for you to eat them. There are several foods that actually can boost your moods when you eat them. When you are feeling a little down and need an emotional boost, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, can be actually wonderful at dealing with depression. You must be sure, however, that what you make includes the yolk. Every time you wish to cheer yourself up, the yolk is the most vital part of the egg. Eggs, the yolks in particular, are rich in B vitamins. B vitamins can actually help you improve your mood. This is because they improve the function of your brain’s neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try consuming a couple of eggs to jolly up!
Put together a trail mix out of seeds and/or nuts. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all great for elevating your mood. This is possible as these foods have a bunch of magnesium which increases your production of serotonin. Serotonin is the “feel good” natural substance that dictates to your brain how you feel at all times. The more serotonin you have, the happier you will feel. Nuts, in addition to raising your mood, can be a great source of protein.
If you wish to overcome depression, try consuming some cold water fish. Herring, trout, tuna, wild salmon, and mackerel are all high in omega-3 fatty acids and DHA. These are two substances that promote the quality and function of the gray matter in your brain. It’s the truth: eating tuna fish sandwiches can truly help you overcome your depression.
Grains can be great for overcoming a bad mood. Quinoa, barley, teff, millet, etc are all excellent for helping you feel happier. They fill you up better and that can help elevate your moods as well. Feeling starved can be a real downer! The reason these grains are so great for your mood is that they are not difficult for your body to digest and process. They are easier to digest than other foods which helps kick up your blood sugar levels and that, in turn, raises your mood.
Green tea is wonderful for moods. You just knew green tea had to be in this article somewhere, right? Green tea is high in a specific amino acid called L-theanine. Studies prove that this particular amino acid can essentially induce brain waves. This helps sharpen your mental energy while at the same time making the rest of your body more relaxed. You probably already knew it is not difficult to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you are well aware that it helps you to lift your moods as well!
So you see, you don’t need junk food or foods that are terrible for you so you can feel better! Try a few of these instead!
